May 2009 Update - Humanitarian Project
Tsuraku Ecuador Water and Sanitation Project
Engineers without Borders - Arizona State University
A non-profit organization called Engineers without Borders (EWB) at Arizona State University is a humanitarian organization established to partner with developing communities worldwide in order to improve their quality of life. This partnership involves the implementation of sustainable engineering projects while involving and training internationally responsible engineers and engineering students.
The organization is working in a small village in Tsuraku, Ecuador, with around forty families with a population of approximately 250 people, over 100 of whom are children. The people of Tsuraku suffer
from periodic water supply shortages, insufficient sanitation and resulting problems with water purity. Engineers without Borders is assisting Tsuraku with the following:
1) Stabilizing the current water distribution system.
2) Improving the water quality in the distribution system
3) Improving the sanitation of the village.
The organization is looking for funding to cover materials and student volunteers' personal expenses. There are two options for donating:
- Donate to the organization directly through the link http://ewb.asu.edu/tsuraku/index.htm. Donations made in this way are tax deductible.
Donate to a specific student. This option eliminates the administrative fees associated with processing and results in your full donation amount being directed to project expenses. Donations to a specific student are NOT tax deductible, but the student will provide an expense report to verify appropriate use of funds for the project. If you are interested in donating to a specific student, please contact Scot Maples at scotmaples@hotmail.com.
The timeframe for donations and for the project is from now until August 31st, 2009. Thank you.
