April 2010 Newsletter
This month we turn to the Vedic system of Hinduism to explore the three main types of human temperaments and how this is reflected in the energy of the world we are now experiencing.
In the Vedic system, there are three basic qualities or human temperaments – tamasic, rajasic, and satvic. A tamasic person is one who seeks instant gratification and may overindulge in such things as alcohol or drugs. A rajasic person undertakes harsh or drastic measures such as working out to an extreme or altering one’s physical appearance through surgery. A satvic person balances his or her energy. He or she tries to live as naturally and purely as possible. Although each person is believed to possess these three qualities, a satvic person is one who has learned to balance his/her energy for the benefit of himself/herself and the world.
The reason we are talking about these three qualities or personalities is so that we can understand how capable we and others are of surrendering.
Most of humans beings–about 90% of people–are tomasic or rajistic. So this is the energy of the whole world. When negative things manifest for us, it is because we tap into this energy. Even if we are satvic people, we really need to understand that we need to keep working a little harder to manifest the positive in our lives. So we should not be surprised that people who are very spiritual, who meditate etc, sometimes manifest negative things. It is very important for us to understand that if we do think negative things, it will manifest very quickly.
Recently there was an experience with a client who went to her naturopathic doctor for a check-up. She had experienced hormonal imbalance but through her dedication and commitment, found a place of balance over time. During a stressful period, she went in for a regular check-up to find that her hormones were out of balance. This is understandable given her stress but not alarming given her overall good health, however she reacted negatively to the results and, under her doctor’s care, undertook a stronger regimen of supplements than she was used to. Within a few days she felt far worse and realized she did not need the stronger supplements. She realized that her emotional reaction to her test results was treated with a strong prescription. Once she had this awareness, she felt the confidence and knowingness that her body’s natural balance would be restored and that she could return to it in a gentle way. Within a couple of days of taking a more gentle approach with supplements, meditation, journaling, and sharing, she felt much better and much more grounded. She now sees how her emotional reaction to her test results set off a chain reaction (a stronger “prescription” than she needed). When we discussed her experience, she commented on how quickly the chain reaction manifested for her.
As we can see with this client’s experience, it’s very important for us to see what personality we are identifying with at any given time. If we have awareness, we can shift very quickly. If we explore and embrace the satvic area of our lives, it is easier for us to surrender.
It is perfect that we begin this month with the satvic Christ energy. As Jesus surrendered to His path with total compassion and understanding, He surrendered to a greater plan, and in so doing, showed us a new way and a new path. Let us follow His example and walk our path as satvic as we can.
Happy Easter Everyone!
Always, Zeffi
